Abstract:
Chemotherapy is a crucial treatment for cancer, but it often comes with significant toxic side effects that impact patient health. This paper explores the application of linear programming as an optimization tool to determine chemotherapy drug dosages that maximize tumor reduction while minimizing toxicity. We begin by presenting the foundations of chemotherapy and toxicology, emphasizing the importance of dose optimization. Next, we introduce mathematical modeling in medicine, focusing on linear programming principles and their relevance in clinical settings. The paper then details the mathematical formulation of the LP problem, defining the objective function and constraints to represent real-world chemotherapy constraints. We apply this model to an illustrative example, solving it using the simplex algorithm, and analyzing the results. Additionally, we discuss alternative methods, such as calibration ranges, to compare their efficiency against LP solutions. Finally, we conclude by highlighting the interdisciplinary role of mathematics and toxicology in improving chemotherapy protocols.
